Description

These Butteries have been carefully refined to honour the way they were traditionally made, restoring the depth of flavour and texture that made them a North East staple. By moving away from modern shortcuts and reintroducing time-honoured methods — including the use of lard — the result is a far superior version of this much-loved classic.

A firm favourite with locals and ex-pats alike, Butteries — also known as Rowies or Aberdeen Rolls — are a true taste of the North East of Scotland. These aren’t the pale imitations found on supermarket shelves, but the real thing: rich, flaky, and unmistakably indulgent.

Distinct from any ordinary roll, Butteries have a uniquely layered texture, somewhere between a croissant and a flatbread, with a satisfying savoury richness. Traditionally made to sustain fishermen heading out to sea, they were designed to be filling, flavoursome, and long-lasting.

Enjoy them warm with Butter, topped with jam, or simply on their own. However you eat them, these are proper Butteries — a proud slice of Scottish baking heritage, made the way they should be.

NOTE: Single packets shipped along with other frozen produce will be frozen on arrival. This won't affect the quality of the product, in fact it keeps them in the best condition.

Cooking Tips

For the very BEST results..

Pop the butteries into the toaster, but here’s the crucial part — don’t remove them straight away once they pop. Thanks to their high fat content, they’ll be quite soft and a little soggy at first (much like freshly baked cookies straight from the oven).

Leave them for a few minutes to rest and cool a bit. This allows the outside to crisp up beautifully while dropping to a temperature that won’t burn your fingers. If you like, you can lift them out with wooden tongs and place them on a wire rack to cool slightly.

It’s this short cooling process that truly brings a buttery back to life — that lightly crispy, flaky exterior giving way to the soft, chewy centre we all recognise as a proper, old-fashioned buttery.
